Hadrian's Wall, Gretna & Border Country Treasures

Day 1

A morning departure as we head north to Carlisle and the village of Wetheral for a 4 night stay at the Crown Hotel. Dinner in the hotel.

Day 2

Our first visit today is the fascinating Devil's Porridge Museum, located on the site of the former HM Factory Gretna, the largest munitions factory in the world during the First World War. Discover the remarkable story of the 30,000 workers, including around 12,000 women, who came from across Britain to work at the factory and help meet the country's urgent need for ammunition. Our day continues as we head to Gretna Green, time for lunch before we say 'I do' on a visit to the famous Blacksmiths Shop Museum, The Story Behind the Anvil will uncover centuries of romance, history and tradition with a guided tour through Scotland's most famous wedding destination. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 3

Today we explore the highlights of Hadrian's Wall, where we are joined by a local guide who will explain the true history of the wall, during a fascinating journey along Rome's most Northerly frontier, our expert guide will bring Roman heritage to life. We explore Corbridge, a former Roman village and see some of the most spectacular parts of Hadrian's Wall on a visit to Roman Vindolanda a well preserved Roman fort and museum. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 4

Today we take a scenic drive into the Lake District to spend the morning in Keswick, situated on the banks of Derwentwater. After lunch we travel to Glenridding where we have a 1 hour cruise on Lake Ullswater. We rejoin our coach at Pooley Bridge for the return to Wetheral and dinner at the hotel.

Day 5

We leave after breakfast and make our way to Carlisle to join the Diesel hauled train to Settle, regarded by many as the most spectacular train journey on a mainline railway in the whole of England. Time for lunch in Settle before we rejoin our coach and complete the journey home.
