Austria - Sound of Music - Lakes & Mountains
On this tour, we embrace the glittering lakes, picture book towns and soaring mountains of Austria's Lake District, the Sound of Music country. We spend 6 nights at the 4 star Bruckenwirt hotel in St Johann im Pongau and have a guided walking tour of Salzburg, a cruise on Lake Wolfgang, a ride on Austria's steepest mountain railway, a visit to one of the prettiest villages in the world and a drive over the mighty Grossglockner highway. On this tour, we embrace the glittering lakes, picture book towns and soaring mountains of Austria's Lake District, the Sound of Music country. Bruckenwirt Hotel
Lovely 4 star family run hotel in the centre of St. Johann im Pongau. All the rooms are traditional in style with extensive use of wood and most have a balcony. Restaurant, bar, lounge and a lift. Leisure facilities include sauna, steam room and outdoor swimming pool.
Day 1
An early hours departure as we travel south to Dover and a morning ferry crossing to Calais, before heading south via Reims and Metz to our overnight hotel the Mercure at Saarbrucken. Time to relax before our evening meal in the hotel.
Day 2
After breakfast in the hotel our journey continues south via Munich and into Austria for a 6 night stay at the 4 star Bruckenwirt hotel in St Johann im Pongau. Dinner in the hotel.
B, DDay 3
Today we visit charming Salzburg, the 1756 birthplace of Mozart and setting of the 1965 film, 'The Sound of Music'. Spread beneath the 11th century Hohensalzburg Fortress, this Austrian city boasts a shop-filled old town, rich museums and a wealth of Baroque churches and squares. We include a guided walking tour before time at leisure. Dinner in the hotel.
Day 4
Day at leisure in St. Johann to enjoy the village. Dinner in the hotel.
Day 5
Today we travel to St Gilgen via Mondsee, to see the famous Sound of Music church, where we have the chance for a photo stop. On arrival in St Gilgen, we have free time to enjoy the village, before boarding our boat to cruise to the lakeside town of St Wolfgang. Here we include a ride on Austria's steepest cog railway which has been running from St. Wolfgang up the Schafberg since 1893. Take in the panoramic views before returning to St Wolfgang . Day 6
This morning we visit the spa town of Bad Ischl for an included visit to the Kaiservilla, the summer residence of Emperor Franz Josef I before spending the afternoon in Hallstatt an UNESCO World Heritage village tucked between the Dachstein Alps and the shores of Lake Hallstatt, often called one of the most beautiful villages in the world. Dinner in the hotel.
B, DDay 7
After breakfast we take the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, one of the most famous scenic drives in Europe, winding through Austria's Hohe Tauern National Park with viewpoints, waterfalls, alpine meadows, and glaciers. Final dinner at the hotel.
Day 8
We leave our hosts at the Brueckenwirt Hotel and make our way back to Saarbrucken and an overnight stay at the Mercure hotel. Dinner in the hotel.
B, DDay 9
We leave after breakfast and head direct to Calais and an early afternoon sailing to Dover. From Dover we are homeward bound.
